}Do Now! In 10 lines explain what “Culture” means to you. Start with your personal definition and give at least three examples in the body of your writing. (This is an open ended constructed response)

}Objective: The purpose of this exercise is to come to a common definition and practical understanding of the term culture, and to demonstrate differences that exist between cultures.

}Objectives:
}1. Students will be able to define culture.
}2. Students will be able to generate a list of terms that describe culture.
}3. Students will be able to identify the basic human needs each item on the list relates to.
}4. Students will be able to describe specific differences in preferred ways of meeting needs.

Culture

Major Concepts For Notebook:

1. Culture is defined as all the ways of living or human made systems built up by a group of people and passed on from generation to

generation.

2. Culture is learned behavior.

3. Culture helps define who we are.

4. Culture can be described in concepts such as: food, clothing, art, music, language, religion, beliefs, values, education, social groups

(family) and organizations, economic system, housing, legal system, etc.

5. People are the same in their basic human needs, but differ in their preferred way of meeting those needs (see Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs below).

6. Culture defines the preferred ways for meeting those needs.
