}Do Now: Set up for computer lab and immediately begin to finish your four page data base for the words you selected from the themes in “The Crucible”. Your goal will be to come up with a thesis statement (Topic) that will have to do with a Contemporary (NOW) issue. This topic will be the theme of your  research paper and 10-15 slide powerpoint.

}During this time I will be checking your Notebook, Journal and Vocab Cards.

}For my classes the quarter will end on Friday of this week. Please get your house in order. Nothing will be accepted for this quarter after Friday.

}A Good Way To Start:

}Write a story about an encounter you had with someone, focusing on things in the scene, how the person dresses, facial expressions and gestures. Use person’s words in some direct quotations, describing voice tone or any other distinguishing features.

}When you write a character sketch you are trying to introduce the reader to someone by creating a strong mental image in carefully chosen words:

}Show their way of doing things

}Discuss what they like and dislike

}Create a snapshot of your person (Using imagery)

}Be aware of details and include them in your descriptions

}Length of essay: One full page in your notebook

}Do a self edit of your work (check for spelling and content)

Homework: Copy final draft of essay on loose leaf paper to be handed in on Friday, Oct 16, 2009.

Journal Work: Upon completion of your final draft  of your “Character Sketch”, you will create a two page collage in your journal notebook. Do a collage background.  Then on this collage background place 10 words or phrases and ten pictures that relate to your character. Somewhere on the collage you must have a title in                                                                                                    large print. } Read Why I Wrote The Crucible Page 3  in Elements Supplement (available in class only). Write fifteen lines in your notebook using Arthur Miller’s essay title as your heading. Make sure your writing includes an answer to Why the author wrote The Crucible. Several question will be added to the vocab test and will be taken from today’s reading.

}Objective: Students will be able to evaluate the philosophical, political, religious, ethical, and social influences of two  historical periods. Also students will understand how to analyze characters and the author’s use of direct and indirect characterization.
